Is It Time to Fire Ryan Day?
First of all… sorry for the break in posting. Midterms have been kicking my ass :)
Ohio State came into this season ranked as the #2 team in the entire country. Expectations were higher than they had ever been for the Buckeyes, as they absolutely dominated the transfer portal, bringing five-star safety Caleb Downs, four-star RB Quinshon Judkins, and four-star QB Will Howard to all be instant starters and impact players for their team. They recruited High School players lights out as well bringing in the number 1 WR in the country in Jeremiah Smith (who is playing phenomenal football right now) and rounding out as the fifth-best class in the 2024 cycle.
But on Saturday the Buckeyes once again experienced disappointment under head coach Ryan Day falling to the Oregon Ducks in Eugene. Now this game was incredibly close with both teams trading punches throughout, but in the end, Will Howard slid down with 0:00 on the clock and OSU missed their chance to kick a game-winning field goal or at least throw up a hail mary. With Saturday’s loss, Day is now 2-5 against top 5 teams as a head coach, which at OSU especially is unacceptable. Not only that but he is 1-3 against Michigan.
It is safe to say boosters and alumni have to be fed up especially with the Buckeyes roster reportedly being paid around 20 million dollars. So where does OSU go from here? Well Ohio State being a blue-blood of CFB with some of the biggest expectations every single year does not leave that much of a margin of error for Coach Day, who has already pushed those limits. However, if they can end up winning out, including the Big 10 Championship, and find their way to a national championship, then I think Day is safe. But if he can’t win at least the Big 10 with this roster, and this amount of money, he will find himself jobless at the end of this year.
Being a College Football Coach is a cut-throat gig, with an unmeasurable amount of pressure, and I truthfully don’t think that Day is bad at it. But when your job is arguably the most sought-after seat in the sport, and you're not producing championships, you’re eventually going to be shown out. We’ll see how the rest of this season plays out, but I believe Ryan Day’s time in Columbus is coming to an end.
