The Sluka Situation

Matt Sluka was a pretty coveted transfer portal prospect this past cycle with many teams interested in his services. UNLV landed the duel-threat QB, and with him under center, they have started 3-0 with two wins coming over power 4 schools.  The Rebels had some of the highest odds for a GO5 team to make the playoffs this year.

But all this success suddenly came to a stop today with Matt Sluka announcing that he plans to redshirt this season and enter the transfer portal due to UNLV not holding up some sort of NIL compensation. Saying “I committed to UNLV based on certain representations that were made to me, which were not upheld after I enrolled. Despite discussions, it became clear that these commitments would not be fulfilled in the future.”

In a statement to ESPN, Sluka’s NIL agent, Marcus Cromartie, stated that Sluka had only received $3,000 of the $100,000 that he was promised. UNLV Athletics released a statement in response to the allegations saying, “Football player Matt Sluka’s representative made financial demands upon the university and its NIL collective in order to continue playing. UNLV Athletics interpreted these demands as a violation of the NCAA pay-for-play rules, as well as Nevada State law.”

The college football world has exploded today over this story with many on the side of Sluka and others referring to him as a quitter. UNLV and Sluka’s statements directly contradict each other, so someone has to be lying. This story should unfold in a fairly timely fashion, and it’ll be interesting to see what the truth is.
