Clicks Do not Equal Wins: The Coach Prime Experiment Has Failed
Deion Sanders is a bad football coach. After having so much hope for the Colorado Buffaloes when he took over, everything has been disappointing. Sure they upgraded their facility, recruited better than Colorado ever has recruited, and with that dominated the transfer portal cycles, so why are they not competing after 2 seasons under Coach Prime? The answer is simple: Clicks do not equal wins.
Let's take a look at the Buffaloes' last two recruiting cycles since Prime took over. In 2022, they landed the 21st-best class in the nation and won the number one transfer class. In 2023 they got the 22nd best class with the 8th best transfer class. The first thing I want to touch on here is that it's not like Deion is bringing in all these freshmen who need time to develop, but rather he’s bringing in proven college starters who have real game experience under their belts, and this team is still horrible. The skill positions are solid, but when you look at the offensive and defensive fronts, there is no push, and they are continuously dominated game in and game out. Of the 44 transfers that the Buffs brought in in 2024, over half were defensive line and offensive line players. So if Colorado is bringing in all this talent, how on earth are they still this bad? It all goes back to coaching.
It boils down to the culture that Prime has built in Colorado. Deion is 5-9 since arriving in Boulder, and the way this team acts you would think he’s 14-0. The “captains” of Colorado don’t wear the patented “C” on their uniforms, instead, it's a hog posh of letters like “L” for leader and “D” for Dawg.
In fact, Deion Sanders said on Undisputed back in September of 2023, “I don’t believe in Captains.” Well, holy shit Prime since you don’t seem to be any kind of leader maybe captains should be a thing in Boulder, just like I don’t know, every single winning program ever? Saturday we saw where the lack of Captainship as starting QB Shedeur Sanders, threw his offensive line under the bus after a blowout loss to rival Nebraska, asking reporters “How many times did Railoa get touched?” referring to the pressure he faced in the game compared to Nebraska’s QB. Everything in Boulder is click-based, and it is rearing its ugly head fast. From social media tags on the backs of jerseys at practice, to Deion Sanders acting like his son Sheduer and star CB/WR Travis Hunter are the greatest prospects of all time claiming that he won’t allow them to play for certain NFL teams, and to not allowing the band to play the fight song after Shedeur scores so that the stadium can hear his own rap song play over the speakers. None of this gets Colorado any closer to winning.
The Deion Sanders experiment has officially failed. Sure there is more money coming into the school, and maybe more eyes on the Buffs than ever before, but mark my words when I say that no Power 4 program will ever be successful under Deion Sanders, and I guarantee that. He’s selfish, and in turn that makes his players play selfish. No one plays as a team in Boulder, it's every man for themselves. The AD has to make a decision at the end of this year, and if I were him it’d be the easiest decision of my life. Fire Deion.
