College Football Bucket List: Whiteout Addition
As a lifelong College Football Fan, I’ve developed a bucket list of top CFB games/experiences I would like to go to/experience. Near the top of that list was a whiteout game at Penn State University. On Saturday, I was lucky enough to go to the game (thanks to my friend and his family) as Penn State took on Washington for their annual whiteout. Here is how my day went.
We started bright and early, waking up around 7:30 a.m. My buddy lives about two hours away from the campus, and our goal was to start tailgating by noon. I go to Syracuse University, which, don’t get me wrong, has a great program rooted in CFB history, but the biggest thing that I think Syracuse lacks is a strong tailgate. When we got to the stadium around noon, there were over 50 different parking lots already packed full of people tailgating for an 8:00 PM game. We set up our tailgate and began the day of drinking, eating, cornhole, washers, and more. The tailgate flew by and soon enough it was time to go into the stadium
Now I think I’ve been to two stadiums that even come close to rivaling Penn State’s atmosphere. The Big House, and Bryant Denny. The stadium seats roughly 105,000 people, and it was jam-packed, probably a little over capacity. As you can see from the picture I took, it is a sea of white throughout the stadium. Penn State deferred the opening kick-off and right on cue before Washington could take their first snap, Mo Bamba started blasting through the stadium’s speakers, and 110,000 people sang along with it. That was no doubt, one of the single coolest experiences of my whole life. The game itself wasn’t anything special as PSU destroyed Washington in a 35-6 slaughter.
Overall, the day and the game itself absolutely lived up to the hype. It was easily one of the best atmospheres I’ve ever been a part of. If you ever get a chance to go to the Whiteout, I highly recommend you don’t pass it up. Huge shoutout to my buddy and his whole family for allowing me to join them. Can’t wait for my next college football bucket list experience.
